How do I place an order?

The SWORDS OF WAR ...

SHORTSWORDS & FALCHIONS for rent

Most hilts can be fitted with almost any blade.  - prices are for the first 30 days rental per sword when outfitted with the corresponding blade. The sword you receive may have a different grip or pommel than that shown in the photo.
Because of limited availability of wide blades, blade substitutions may be required on rental orders at any time.

("what kind of blade do I need?") blade choices

[Do you need only the sword, or some way to attach it to the actor as well? Once you're done selecting the hilt and blade, take a look at our  leather goods  rental section which has sashes, belts, frogs and scabbards]

The swords on this page span over 3000 years of Western civilization, but all have the same basic design principle. These are single hand swords used by the soldier fighting in battle - not for civilian disputes nor for the mounted knights. These are weapons for soldiers and were never worn off of the field of war.

Photos are to illustrate the guard only. Grip and pommel may change with every weapon.

571 - TUSCANY - Simplest and and earliest sword-guard known. This guard and pommel are steel, but the originals would have been wood or bone.

423 - THOR - typical pre-Norman single hand sword. Especially seen in bronze-age cultures of Europe. The guard and pommel are aluminum and steel with brass inserts simulating the rivets originally used to bind the guard and grip to the blade

costume – [$21.74]    leaf – [$33.39]    shortsword or one-hand – [$37.91]    vorpal – [$42.09]

570 - SPATHA - The Romans were the first to specifically train their soldiers in the use of the sword as a tactical tool and then build their battle formations around it. This version is great for Will’s toga plays, but it's also a good Greek choice.

costume – [$19.48]    leaf – [$31.13]    shortsword – [$35.65]    vorpal – [$39.83]

499 - CELTIC - typical pre-Norman single hand sword. Especially seen in bronze-age cultures of Europe. Brass pommel and guard.        costume – [$21.68]    leaf – [$35.79]

330 - HAMPTON - simple, strong single-hand guard, also makes a powerful medieval dagger. This basic brass hilt style is seen on swords from 3000 BC to the late 1500’s AD.

costume – [$15.79]    leaf – [$29.89]    shortsword – [$35.37]

vorpal – [$40.42]    one hand – [$33.37]    dagger - [19.37]

305 - ARTHURIAN - A beautiful guard, single hand broadsword

costume – [$16.42]    shortsword – [$36.00]    vorpal – [$41.05]    one hand – [$36.00]

Did you know that... most warriors in the middle ages did not fight with swords? Even most knights realized that the mace and ax were in many ways superior, and common foot soldiers had neither the money to purchase a sword nor the time to train in its use. The most common edged weapon on the battlefield was the falchion, a single edged two-foot weapon, much like the machete, in which all you do is chop away at whatever is coming near you. Interestingly, only one complete infantry falchion survives, for a very good reason. Swords were treasured heirlooms, but since common soldiers were also farmers once a battle was over, the falchion was converted to farming or butchering duties. No sentimentality was attached to it as was with the sword.

551 - CANTERBURY FALCHION – simple hand-guard for the falchion, and though the look seems rather exotic, it was fairly common in Europe during in the 11th and 12th centuries. Especially when fitted with the falchion blade (shown above), makes for exciting close quarter fighting.

costume – [$14.43]    falchion– [$26.09]    one hand – [$30.61]    shortsword – [$30.61]
