Shipping to Canada Before 9/11, our props had been purchased and rented by theatres throughout the globe. That is no longer viable for us, but we do miss renting our swords to Canadian institutions. We used to rent to Canadian schools and theatres quite frequently, but then two things happened. First, Canadian customs laws changed so that replicas of firearms are no longer allowed to cross the border. Second, we had some unfortunate experiences with a few clients who took advantage of our liberal rental policies, and we learned the hard way that there is very little leverage we have on this side of the 49th parallel to compel the return of our items. After much discussion, we have decided to modify our "no international shipments" policy to once again allow orders to Canada. But unlike our domestic rental policies, the Canadian Exception will have terms that are similar to those used by Hollywood film rental companies (which we have always tried to avoid):
v We will not accept cheques or purchase orders. Credit card or PayPal only. v No firearm rentals are permitted, either blank-fire or simple prop. If it looks like a gun, it doesn't leave the country. v A full deposit, equal to six times the basic rental rate, must be paid in advance before items are shipped. The deposit will be refunded once items are returned, less the following - § Complete rental charge § Shipping and Customs fees § Any late return fees § Any repair or replacement costs on damaged or missing items We realize that the deposit is rather steep, and that most schools and theatres can barely come up with the rental, let alone the deposit. We hate to do it, but for the time being this is the only way we feel comfortable sending our props across the border.
